A Republican Guide to Avoiding the Jubilee

Jubilee celebrations will be taking place from June 2nd to 5th all around the country. Millions of people are expected to be raising a glass to commemorate the momentous occasion.

The topic itself of the role of the Royal Family is one which is very debatable and as a result, it is understandable that some people may be less inclined to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s rule this weekend.

Patriotic scenes are being displayed throughout the city centre meaning you are never too far away from union jacks or red, white and blue bunting.

There are increasingly more amounts of people who are becoming less interested in the Royal Family spectacle, with some taking actions to express their dislike of the monarchy.

Some billboards displaying the message ‘Make Elizabeth the Last’ are to be displayed around the UK this weekend, organised by anti-monarchy group Republic.

A spokesperson from the Republic said: "These billboards are part of a wider move to generate a bigger, louder public debate about the future of the monarchy.

"Recent polls now show more than 1 in 4 want the monarchy abolished, while support has dropped from 75% to 60%. Ten years ago, around 10,000 street parties were registered for the jubilee, this time it's just 1700.

"The monarchy is increasingly out of touch and out of time. We need to prepare to move on and start electing our head of state."

If you are still within York city during the weekend and would prefer to avoid the patriotism, here are some suggestions of places to go.

Visit the Theatre

What better way to avoid the street parties then to go to the theatre for a bit of escapism for several hours. The Grand Opera House is showing multiple performances of the murder mystery, fast-paced The Da Vinci Code. The play is based on the best-selling novel which has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. The Theatre Royal is showing Human and Now That’s What We Call Musicals over the weekend.

Camping

Camping almost always provides you with limited service and signal meaning you won’t have to be bombarded with countless articles and alerts on the Queen’s whereabouts all weekend. There are camping premises located at Rowntree Park and Caravan site, Malton Road, Poppleton and Pool Bridge Farm.

Go to the Cinema

There is no place better for escapism than watching a film. If you wish to stay away from the hustle and bustle of town then consider the likes of Everyman, Cineworld or Vue for a movie getaway. With new releases such as Top Gun: Maverick, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Lost City and Downton Abbey, you are bound to find a release to distract you from the processions.

Walking

It may seem straight forward but a simple walk can help you clear your mind free from any thoughts of Royal Families. There are plenty of walks away from the city centre to keep you away from the seas of red, white and blue. There are routes around Fulford, Heslington, Bishopthorpe and Elvington.
