Where to go for Half Term in York

With May half-term now upon us, it can be difficult to plan activities and days out. Fear not, as here is a rundown of events happening within the city for the bank holiday break.

York Spring Fair and Food Festival at York Racecourse

Before the hustle and bustle of Race season sweeps the streets of York, the Knavesmire is hosting a Spring Fair and Food festival for all to enjoy. The event will host one of the largest vintage funfairs in North Yorkshire with rides including a Carousel, Dodgems, Tea Cups and the Twister. To tickle your taste buds, the event is showcasing a vast range of food from Yorkshire and beyond. You will be spoilt for choice with street food including the likes of burgers, coffee, fish, pizza and cider. The Yorkshire Bus Bar is also making a stop at the event serving local gins and ales.

The Viking Festival

The Viking Festival is hosting a wide variety of events, with something for everyone to enjoy. There are walking tours of the city to uncover the immense York history, where you may stop at the staging area on Parliament Street to watch storytelling re-enactments and sword-fighting workshops. You could have a go at Viking activities such as Nalebinding, an archaeological dig, tablet weaving and helmet making. There will also be a mead tasting taking place as well as a talk from Horrible Histories author Terry Deary who will discuss the gruesome guide of York. York’s Chocolate story masterclass

If you and your friends fancy yourselves as the next chocolatiers then York is the place to be. With the city’s rich chocolate history, you will be able to concoct a sweet treat in no time. Whether you are with your family or fancy a fun activity with your friends, a chocolatier-led masterclass is perfect for the May break. A chocolatier will guide you through a multitude of activities from lollypop making to piping your own cholate bar. The Bar Covent

This year sees the 80th Anniversary of the Baedeker Raids within York and the Bar Convent have created a photo exhibition display of the history of York residents’ bravery within the War. The Covent was hit during the Luftwaffe bombing, which killed five sisters. The display informatively depicts the bravery of sisters within the Covent who became Firewatchers during the War. Children have the opportunity to make their own firewatcher badge as part of the exhibition. More information can be found here.

Thor’s Bar

If you’re in need of some relaxation, Thor’s Bar is for you. Opening from 1st June, the outdoor and indoor bar located at the Principal Hotel is returning for another summer. The tipi set up is a picturesque location for you to enjoy cocktails, slushies, salads and meals. It will be open daily from 12pm to 11pm with card payments only.
