How to Get Back into Exercise After a Break

Having time out from the gym is sometimes just what we need, however getting back into the swing of things can be difficult at the best of times. With summer on the horizon, this is the time many panic and want to squeeze in workout after workout to feel fit and healthy before sunnier days.

According to Strava (LINK), one of the main reasons people pause on working out is that poor mental health makes getting up to exercise incredibly difficult. Other reasons include illnesses and a simple lack of motivation.

Sometimes, other priorities take over and there is nothing wrong with taking a break when we feel like it. The most common challenges many men and women face are low confidence and poor body image. Exercise can not only help you get fit and healthy physically but can also stimulate endorphins that positively impact your mental health and your happiness.

Running can be a great way to get back into exercise gradually whilst exploring new areas and enjoying different routes.

York is great for going on a run, as with it not being a city full of hills and mountain inclines, runners can appreciate many different routes and for those just starting out or getting back into exercise, this is much less overwhelming.

With many parks and routes such as Museum Gardens, Rowntree Park and the Knavesmire, running in York has never been so pleasant.

For those not quite up for running, or maybe you feel as though everything is getting a little much one day, the same routes and bridleways are perfect for a walk to clear the head. With so many spots to take in, a walk will most definitely do you the world of good on those days where doing anything else seems impossible.

The first step is always the hardest, but once you start feeling as though you’re in better shape, both psychically and mentally, you’ll thank yourself that you took that step.
