York City have paid tribute to former striker Craig Farrell, who has died aged 39.

In his early career, Farrell featured for Carlisle United and was capped three times by England Under-16s.

Farrell joined York after leaving Exeter in 2006. Scoring 10 goals in his first season, the club reached the play-off semi-finals of the Conference National, losing out with a 2-1 loss to Morecambe. He then bagged 14 goals the following season.

After leaving York permanently for Rushden and Diamonds, Farrell went on to play for AFC Telford United, Hinckley United, Blyth Spartans and Whitby Town.

York City paid tribute to Farrell on twitter, writing: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of former player Craig Farrell, aged 39.

“Craig made 111 appearances and scored 27 goals for City between 2006 and 2009. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”

Farrell’s former clubs also expressed their sadness at hid passing, with Whitby, Blyth and Exeter all making statements and giving their sympathies to those he has left behind.
